Have you ever tried to build curved concrete sections with form-and-pour? Not easy, is it? You may immediately think of pools and skateparks where rounded and even double-curved shapes are common. But what about architectural concrete, with free-flowing sections, where the designer wants a signature look that doesn’t necessarily use flat formwork? Shotcrete placement has been used for concrete construction for nearly 120 years, providing an efficient and cost-effective solution for a wide range of creative concrete structures. This seminar covers field considerations, including reduced formwork needs and scheduling advantages, achieving quality shotcrete placement, inspection during placement, shotcreter and inspector certifications, and contractor qualifications.

Concrete creates durable structures expected to last a century or more, but with varied exposure and loading conditions, they require maintenance. Being able to repair, rehabilitate or repurpose is a cost-effective and efficient way to extend a structure’s life. Shotcrete placement has been used for decades for concrete repairs. It inherently provides a high-strength, durable concrete in place with excellent bonding to an existing substrate. But shotcrete placement is different than hand patching or casting concrete. It needs attention to the details of materials, equipment, and application techniques to give the best results. This seminar provides a basic overview of the shotcrete process, covering the design, specifying, and detailing considerations for the design of shotcrete repairs. The session will also cover key field considerations, including reduced formwork needs, scheduling advantages, inspection, and routinely achieving quality shotcrete placement.

This 7-hour program is a requirement for all shotcreters wishing to pursue certification as an ACI Shotcreter (formerly known as Nozzleman) through ASA. This registration includes the required CP60 workbook (available in English or Spanish) and a complimentary 1-year ASA Shotcreter membership. (Registering for this class would also require you to sign up for an Exhibit-Only Pass, available for $50 using ASA’s source code: A17. Class is listed under Association and Industry Training.) With the strong growth of shotcrete construction, the concrete construction industry needs on-site inspectors who are knowledgeable about producing high-quality and durable shotcrete. This one-day session from ASA provides guidance on over 40 critical elements of shotcrete applications to properly evaluate the overall quality of shotcrete – valuable information for on-site inspectors, General Contractors, shotcrete contractors and others who hire shotcrete sub-contractors. Topics covered include material selections, equipment, placement techniques, finishing, curing, protection, testing and safety as it relates to the shotcrete process.
This seminar supports the American Concrete Institute’s (ACI) Shotcrete Inspector Certification program. It also serves as the prerequisite for WaterShape University’s (WU) Certified Watershape Shotcrete Specialist (CWSS)program and the subsequent Certified Pool Shotcrete Inspector (CPSI) program. William Drakely
William Drakeley is an award-winning shotcrete technologist specializing in concrete science and construction, particularly shotcrete applications, techniques and standards, with over thirty years experience in shotcrete installation, water feature and geotech design and construction. Services include consultation and review, training and testing and expert testimony. He’s principal and founder of Drakeley Pool Company, a luxury design and build firm based in New England; and, Drakeley Industries, an international consulting firm focusing on shotcrete applications and techniques, notably providing training for the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority underground tunneling projects. An educator and advocate for high industry standards, Bill has most recently developed and launched Watershape University (WU) with colleague David Peterson, P.E. to provide the highest quality of live instruction of business, design, engineering and construction programs to students of all levels of pool, spa, aquatics and outdoor living sectors. Bill has conducted trainings for the Colorado School of Mines, the American Society of Landscape Architects (CT), World of Concrete, NESPA, and others. His technical writings have been widely published in trade magazines and e-publications.

Raúl Armando Bracamontes Jiménez, Ing., graduated from ITESO University (Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Occidente) in 1994 with a degree in civil engineering and has been working in the concrete industry ever since. Currently the owner of ADRA Ingeniería S.A. de C.V. since 2005, he is fluent in Spanish and English with multiple publications and courses given on shotcrete on his résumé. He is an ACI Approved Shotcreter Examiner. Bracamontes is a member of Instituto Mexicano del Cemento y del Concreto (IMCYC), Colegio de Ingenieros Civiles de León (CICL), and the American Shotcrete Association
